Bryan Bridges Engraving
Tempe, AZ
480-345-7424
brysculp@gmail.com
Bryan Bridges is offering private beginning, intermediate, and advanced engraving classes. Three different class sessions will be offered; a three-hour
session, which can be held weekly, a whole day session, and a two-day session.
Classes will be individually tailored to the skill level and interests of the student. All tools and supplies will be provided. The engraving techniques taught
will be pertinent to firearms, knives, jewelry and to many other applications.
Lunch will be provided for the one and two day sessions. Transportation to and from the airport will also be provided for the out of town students.
Accommodations for the one and two day students will be found and agreed upon ahead of time.
All classes will be at the rate of fifty dollars per hour.
Students will be familiarized with some of the latest tools and equipment, including the Lindsay PalmControl AirGraver and the bridges-automated turntable.
Beginners will learn how to tool up with the best equipment at a minimum of cost, even making some of their own equipment.
If you are an experienced or advanced engraver, but are not yet quite satisfied, or want to explore some new techniques, improve your work aesthetically, or
just want to become more efficient, so that you can earn more money per hour, come to class, and we can work on each area until you are satisfied that you are
on the right track.
Bryan will work from a viewpoint differing from the prevailing jewelry engraving trade. His background as a sculptor and die engraver, leads him to use some of
the ordinary tools of the jewelry engraver in ways differing from jewelry engraving. Also, he will introduce the jewelry engraver to some tools and equipment,
which will be foreign to them, but which are useful to firearms, knives, and to many other engraving endeavors in general.
Bryan is a thoroughly trained and experienced engraver with more than forty years full time in the business. He has a bachelor of fine arts degree, with
honors, from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago with a major in sculpture, and is a journeyman die engraver. He has studied with Winston Churchill and
with Lynton McKenzie, who was his neighbor in Tucson for many years. Much of his work has been done for the various private mints in this country. His hand
engraved coins, medallions, firearms, and knives are in collections all over the world and he has an engraved knife in the permanent collection of the
Smithsonian Institution. He has engraved the portraits of our presidents, our social, political, and business leaders, our movie stars, and our sports greats,
from John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, to Evil Knivel, and Elvis Presley. His bronze sculptures may be seen at the Rive Gauche Gallery in Scottsdale
Arizona.

Roland BAPTISTE Engraving Studio (Belgium)
Modave (Belgium) +32 476 845 560
Engravings by
Roland Baptiste
Roland Baptiste would like to offer classes for people wanting to learn how to engrave with older and modern
techniques. The tradition of Liege has been characterized by the use of the hammer and graver for centuries in this city. (The city of Liege
has a very famous history of weaponry and many makers are known throughout the world are from Liege.) Roland offers one of the few
possibilities to work with a PalmControl AirGraver in Europe. Pupils will be taught one on one in order for the training to be more personalized.
Pupils will work under optimal conditions.
The courses are on a 5 days basis for a sum of 600€ ( +-$900US).
Classes will be held from 8:30 am to 5 pm.
There is a nice hotel in the proximity
www.hoteldestouristes.be and several restaurants. Lunch will be provided at Roland's.
Engraving, for Roland Baptiste, is a passion passed on to him by his father. As a young child Roland was
intrigued by the sound of hammer and chisel from his father's engraving workshop. It was thus quite natural that he would be directed towards
studying engraving at the School of Arms manufacture at Liege. He graduated in 1993 after having refined his talent during years at an occupation
which enabled him to unceasingly improve the control of his tools of engraving. He decided finally to devote his time entirely to the art of
engraving. He was determined to preserve his freedom of expression and creativity which led him to refuse to yield to the constraint of
manufacturing in series, even for famous makers. He preferred to turn to certain arms manufacturers and private individuals with whom he was
privileged to be creative when working on projects. He has worked mainly with contacts from France, Germany and Belgium creating fine weapons to
achieve the highest quality which a Master can reach. The signature of his work is found in the details of his work. He has been present at
various shows such as Rambouillet, Country Show, Knives in festival with Nontron, Eghezée and Amay. He has always been pleased to explain the
techniques and subtleties of his work. When you meet, it take a student only a few moments to share his vision of the most beautiful weapons of
hunting.

coming over here from England and teaching a class on English Scroll in June.
CJ Alan will continue to teach his Motorcycle
engraving classes here in 2009 and we are adding a couple advanced motorcycle engraving classes to his line up in 2009
I have also worked it out so that there are a few opportunities to take two classes back to back to save on travel expenses. See the schedule below for

The basic level classes are geared toward getting the novice headed in the right direction. The content covered in this class includes.
- Bench set up and equipment
- Making and sharpening tools

Intermediate Engraving classes ($1,200 for Mon-Fri. intensive course)
The Intermediate classes tend to be very individualized with the goal being to take engravers with a good control of basic skills and raise them to the
next level.
Students considering this class should already be able to sharpen a square and flat gravers, design and cut basic scrollwork, and have a good tool
control. (If you're not sure if you are ready for this class email ray with some pictures of your work and he will advise you which class to take.)
The content covered in this class includes.

Nov. 2-6, 2009 this class follows Oct. 26-30 basic MC engraving
Advanced classes ($500 per day private one on one instruction)
During the past two years most of the people interested in advanced instruction have opted for private one on one instruction Rather than a structured
class. This works well because it allows the student to work on specific skills in their own time frame. That being the case I have decided to do advanced
instruction on a private lesson basis in 2009.
Private instruction at all levels cost $500 per day and can be arranged during a time that works for both Ray and the Student.
Motorcycle Engraving classes with CJ Allan
($1,000 for Mon-Fri intensive basic class)
($750 Three day weekend Advanced class)
CJ and I have decided to offer both basic and advanced instruction in the Motorcycle Engraving classes. We have set up the classes so the Student can take
one or the other. or take the basic and advanced classes back to back. I have scheduled the classes so that the basic class runs one week (Mon-Fri) and
the advanced class runs the Sat. - Mon following the basic class. This allows the student to take both with one trip tot eh school.
I also have One of CJ's Motorcycle basic class running in conjunction with an intermediate and basic class that I am teaching. See the schedule below for
dates. Again this allows the student to take both classes with one trip to the school.
In the basic motorcycle engraving class content includes:
-Set-up of work area
-Preparation of area to be engraved
-Choosing, obtaining and transferring patterns
-Making, sharpening and use of gravers
-Little tricks from CJ that make his work ""pop""
In the advanced classes content includes:
-advanced sculpted engraving
-copper/gold inlay and overlays
For more individualized instruction, classes are limited to 5 students
The dates for the Motorcycle Engraving classes are:
Oct. 6-10,2008 Basic MC class
Dec. 8-12, 2008 Basic MC class
Apr. 27-May1, 2009 Basic engraving class followed by May 4-8, 2009 Basic MC class followed by May 9-11 Advanced MC class

Oct 26. 30, 2009 Basic MC class
English Engraving class with Simon Lytton ($1,200 for Mon-Fri intensive class)
This is an intermediate level class. Students should already be able to sharpen tools, understand the basics scroll and leaf anatomy and have a fair level
of tool control.
This class will concentrate on Fine English Scroll. The construction of the individual scrolls and the construction of scroll layouts for use on guns,
knives, and other engraved items. You will learn to draw and cut Fine English Scroll.
The date for this class is June 8-12, 2009

|
There will be no regularly scheduled workshops held at SJAS this year. However, I will be taking some
private students - if and when time allows during the year.
After 30 years at the bench and another 10 years of teaching, I am taking some time off - to travel, take
some workshops myself, and finish up old projects.
Email with your particular interest for available dates.
